Inside the nose there is a mucous membrane of the size of a postage stamp with several million sensory cells on it.
Each olfactory cell is a specialist responsible for a special part of the smell.
The olfactory mucous membrane sends signals to the brain where they are recognised.
The nose is also an air-conditioning system (warms up cold air), a washing machine (the hairs in the nose clean things) and an alarm system (it warns us, for example, if food is bad).

Information and ideas:
The multi-talented nose: guess what different smells are, reference to nose as alarm system warning us of danger e.g. in the event of fire or with acids.
