The graphic shows the relationship between slash-and-burn clearing of tropical rainforests and global warming: Forest area is decreasing as a result of slash-and-burn, and less carbon dioxide is being absorbed from the air. In addition, combustion gases are increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide absorbs the heat radiated from Earth into outer space. This facilitates the greenhouse effect, increasing the temperature on Earth.

Information and ideas:
The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assumes that slash-and-burn clearing of tropical rainforests contributes between 10 percent and 20 percent to the global greenhouse effect.
