Biomass is one of the oldest sources of energy used by humans, mainly in the form of wood. The energy is “extracted" from it by burning. Alongside wood, green plants (for example switchgrass) and dried dung can also be burnt. In the face of the shortage of petroleum, biomass is being used increasingly to produce fuel. The diagram shows which chemical processes are used here and which biofuels are created using these processes.
