Hydrogen features heavily in the current debate on environmentally friendly energy sources for the future, partly because it is seen as a climate-friendly fuel (hydrogen motor, fuel cell) and an energy source of enormous potential (nuclear fusion), and partly because hydrogen provides an excellent form of storage for electric current. On the downside, however, is the fact that hydrogen is rarely found in its elemental form on earth and has to be produced in an energy-intensive process which can release climate-damaging exhaust gases.
This media package first focuses on the chemical properties of hydrogen looked at from the point of view of energy. Second, the package describes the basic physical principles behind energy conversion processes and presents the modern technologies involved. It also offers starting points for cross-curricular teaching, for example in combination with history.
The media package provides several media files (charts, simulations, one experimentation instruction, information sheets, project ideas, information sources and link lists, and a guideline for teachers) that will provide you with practical teaching support. The contents can be used for grade 7 through grades 11 and 12.
