Simple experiment which demonstrates how the eardrum works.
Experiment setup:
Thin paper or foil is fastened over the end of a cardboard tube. Grains of sand are put on the paper.
If something is said into the open end of the tube, it can be observed how the grains of sand move.
Information and ideas:
To prepare or back up the subject. An experiment that can be done easily in the classroom.
Variation of the experiment:
Fit sort of membrane at the top and bottom of the tube. Tighten membrane with rubber bands. Put grains of salt at the top end and then strike the foil at the bottom end.
It can be observed that the grains of salt move (= the pressure was conveyed through the air!).
