Description:
The ear can be divided into three sections: outer, middle and inner ear.
The outer ear (pinna) collects the sound, which is then conveyed via the ear canal to the inner ear. Here the sound is amplified because of the small diameter of the eardrum and of the structure of the ossicles (malleus, incus, stapes). The sound waves are transmitted to the cochlea, where they are turned into electrical signals. These are then conveyed via the auditory nerve to the brain, where they are recognized as words and understood.
