Development of renewable energies worldwide

In 2005, the share of renewable energies worldwide was still approximately 12 percent. By 2018, the share had increased to approximately 18 percent, as the first chart shows. As the second chart shows, it will increase to approximately 50 percent by 2040 according to forecasts by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Many people view this skeptically, but the third chart shows that global investments in renewable energies has grown tremendously. In 2019 alone, for example, China invested US$90 billion and is now the global leader in renewable energies in absolute and relative terms. By contrast, the former front-runner, Germany, has fallen behind considerably. The fourth chart shows that the changeover to renewable energies in Germany is progressing rapidly when it comes to power generation, while it is stagnating for transportation and heating. This is a phenomenon that so far applies to most countries around the world.
