Different materials can be used to absorb sound. The best absorbers are materials like wool or styrofoam; stone slabs do not absorb sound very well. When a house or apartment is being built, carpets are laid on the floor, ceilings have a layer of styrofoam, or sound-absorbent tiles made of compressed cardboard are used.

With the help of the experimentation instructions, the students should find out for themselves in an experiment which materials are most suitable for sound absorption. They can work through a list of materials and should come up with their own ideas of insulating materials.
